HSR station in Taipei — Taipei Main vs. Nangang
The HSR in Taipei stops at two stations:
Taipei (台北): The main HSR station, located underground at Taipei Main Station — the same complex as the MRT and TRA regional trains. This is where most tourists board. Best location for in-city access.
Nangang (南港): The eastern terminus, added when the line extended north. Near Nangang Software Park and accessible by MRT Blue Line. Useful if you are staying in the east of the city, otherwise Taipei station is more central.

Taroko Gorge (太魯閣) is on the east coast — not directly connected by HSR. The two common routes:
Route 1 (Recommended): TRA from Taipei to Hualien

Booking tips — getting the best HSR fares
Book early for discounts: The THSR offers early booking discounts of up to 35% on the app and website. These require booking 10+ days in advance and cannot be changed after purchase. If you know your dates, the savings are real — a NT$700 Taichung ticket drops to NT$455.
Check shoulder-service trains first: Trains before 08:00 and after 20:00 on weekdays get a 20% discount without restrictions. If you are doing a day trip to Taichung (early start back, late return), these trains may match your natural travel times anyway.
Seat selection: Standard cars have 2+3 seating (2 seats window-side, 3 seats aisle-side). The 2-seat side has more space per seat and is preferred. Car 8 and Car 12 are quiet cars on some trains.
