Day 1: Taipei — city orientation

Reversing the route: Taroko first or Sun Moon Lake first?
The order here (lake first, gorge second) works well because Sun Moon Lake’s pace is gentler and eases you into multi-city travel before Taroko’s more demanding train-booking window. Reversing it has one real advantage: booking Taroko’s express trains as early as possible reduces the risk of them selling out, since that’s the tighter constraint of the two. If you’re planning this trip more than a month out, consider locking in Day 4’s Hualien train first, then building the rest of the week around whichever dates remain.
